Although the vast majority of holidaymakers will head for the islands, each year many thousands of visitors visit both popular and out of the way destinations on the mainland too. Most of these tend to be located in or near the coastal areas, such as the three outcrops or 'fingers' making up the area of Halkidiki, but some will head inland too. Naturally the capital, Athens, and its true cosmopolitan atmosphere are high on the 'must visit once in a lifetime' list for any 'culture buff' and all through the year it has a constant stream of tourists heading for its hotels, shops and antiquities. The Peloponnese, southernmost point of the Balkan peninsula and effectively a huge island after being severed from the mainland by the the Corinth Canal, boasts anicent Olympia and the Venetian town of Nafplio plus remarkable natural scenery ranging from valleys and groves to snow capped peaks.
