Selected Islands : Chios | Lesvos | Samos | Thassos Welcome to the North Aegean Islands. Too widely spaced apart, really to be called a group, these islands, like the Dodecanese, are in closer proximity to Turkey than to Greece; many do not even share the same history although all of them became part of the Ottoman empire and then, in 1912, became part of Greece. Somewhat less popular than some of the islands in the Dodecanese or Cyclades, the North Aegean islands have much to offer, with mountains inland and beautiful beaches on the coast, plus many important historical sites. The seven most important islands in the group are, Chios, Ikaria, Lesvos, Limnos, Samos, Samothraki, and Thasos. Getting to the islands needn't be a problem. Most of the major islands have air links with Athens and some with Thessaloniki. Ferry services from Alexandroupolis, Kavala, Piraeus, Rafina and Thessaloniki link mainland Greece with the islands. |
